4/14

Alrighty. It's been a while - things have been crazy. Left off 6 days ago in Washington D.C., and I'll fill in what's happened since then. Highlights from each day.

Wednesday morning I took a train from Union Station in D.C. to meet up with my family in NYC. That night, we went to see Wicked, which was great, but the L.A. show is better in my opinion. After the show, I got my first showing of Times Square, and it was crazy. Bustling with people, crazy.

Thursday, we went to see the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. They don’t let you all the way to the top, but you can go pretty high. After dinner at a little steakhouse called Peter Luger, we went to see a show called Mamma Mia. Every song they sing is an Abba song, fit into the story. Speaking of the story, the characters are crass, as was the plot, so I don't recommend it for that reason, but the songs were just incredible.

Friday we went to lunch and dinner with the Dempsey’s, then saw The Little Mermaid. We had a backstage tour afterwards too, that was cool, the place they are playing at is really small, props are put in crazy places during the show. Best part was that after our tour, we exited via the stage door, where mobs of people were lining up to meet the cast. So when we went out, everyone thought we were in the play, and started shoving sharpies and playbills at us. I *almost* signed some people stuff, but that would be mean to ruin their playbills. But it was really fun, my minute of fame.

Saturday was Ground Zero. Taking a break from shows, we went to this museum of pictures from the only photographer that was allowed into ground zero during rescue/cleanup. About 6 weeks in, he was about to quit – he was seriously depressed by his work. He saw death and despair, both on the firefighters and the victims. Then he found a paper. It was a page of the bible. Genesis 11. If you go to the title of chapter 11, it reads, “The Tower of Babel”. Pretty neat. So he had some amazing pictures, and the tour was a headset with the story behind each picture/exhibit. After that we went to the actual site. Across the street is a church the firemen used to rest during the breaks, so we went inside to see the memorials/whatever they had inside. Well the photographer who’s museum we were just at, was there signing his book, so we got a chance to talk to him, get a feel what it was for him to literally have to do it. He asked to take our picture with Emma’s camera, and afterwards said that that was the first picture he had taken inside the church in over 6 years. Pretty cool. Went dinner with Dempsey’s as well that night.

Sunday, maybe the best day so far, was spent entirely with the Dempsey’s. We went to a church that was a little iffy, but ok. That wasn’t what made it good. The goodness started by going to a really good burger place, then went down to the Nokia Theatre in Times Square to see the Steven Curtis Chapman concert. With the Dempsey’s sweet relations with the Chapman’s, we talked to Steven for a little bit, then he had to go, then Mr. Dempsey, Taylor and I talked to their boys while the girls and my dad went to one of the many starbucks. They went off to sound check, and it only being around 3, we went to Chinatown/knock-off city to do a little shopping. It’s so funny to go into the shops, all the vendor are selling the exact same thing, trying to give you a better deal than the last person. Fun stuff. Before heading back to the venue, we went to a good pizza place called John’s, which was some of the best New York Pizza. Back at the show, we picked up our aftershow/all-access passes, and enjoyed the show. It was pretty cool. Afterwards, we got some pictures, and talked a bit more. Steven’s boys, Willie Frank and Caleb are pretty cool, me and Taylor talked to them for a while.

Monday, today, the Dempsey’s headed home and we headed to Philly. We got in around 3-4, and got our first Philly Cheesesteaks, and saw the Liberty Bell. We have a full day planned tomorrow at Gettysburg and “Amish Country”, so I doubt any of us will blog then.

Toodles.

4/08

Ok, I left the memory card in the computer last night when I was transferring pictures, and forgot to put it in this morning, but the camera had some internal memory, and could hold about 9 pictures. So I took only the pictures I would put up here, hoping I could transfer them to the memory card. And, that didn't work, so this will be a picture less blog.

We slept in till about 9, then headed down to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. After the mediocre rations, we headed down to the Holocaust Museum. It was amazing. We spent about 4 hours there, watched/read/saw about everything there. I definitely recommend it to anyone.

After that, we boarded a bus to Jefferson Memorial and Arlington Cemetery. We watched the changing of the guard, and saw the eternal flame.

Tomorrow morning, I'm taking the 8:35 train to New York to meet up with the rest of my family. Wicked tomorrow night! So I'm not sure if I will be blogging while in New York, but I hope to. My trip takes a focus shift from history to food, as the main purpose of the New York trip is food. My parents may not admit it, but it's true.

Things I learned/observed:
· All taxi interiors and drivers look exactly the same
· It's not ok to sit in a gift shop and read almost a whole book
· Most people don't live up to the fashion standard that is drew

Hope you enjoyed this highly professional post!

à demain.

WWII War Memorial

Lincoln Memorial

Don't worry, I was respectful.

View from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

I really like this one.

Ok cool story. We were walking around the WWII War Memorial, and there were around 70 young, buff, men in suits and ties, just walking around taking pictures and whatever. They didn't seem like a tour group so I asked one of them where they were from. He replied that they were the 2008 NCAA Football National Championship from LSU. It was pretty cool, I felt like I recognized some of them, but couldn't put my finger on it. I had watched the game, and recognized some of the players. This was just a couple of them at the snack bar. And for some reason, that lady is smiling at me....

4/06

The day started by getting adjusted to local time quite abruptly by getting up at 6 for a 7:30 tour. After a well guided tour through the city, seeing what was heralded the first cobblestone street, seeing Robert Lee’s childhood home, and other historic places, we were dropped off at Mount Vernon. The weather today was light/medium showers, so waiting in a 40 minutes line to get into the main house wasn’t the most enjoyable thing, and unfortunately they didn’t allow pictures inside, so I don’t have proof we went inside. You’ll have to settle for these. The indoor pictures you see are from the museum recently added to the center.

G'Dub's backyard

Lovely cherry blossoms

A wax sculpture of G'Dub at age 22. Cool because they had no pictures/paintings/sculptures of him before age 40. They did some scientific stuff to try to get what he would look like.

At age 40

Age 60-something, doesn't matter, he's old.

Self-Explanatory.

What....

One of those thing where it looks like he is looking at you no matter where you are.

After returning to our hotel to drop off our rain clothes which were no longer needed, we walked the block and a half from our hotel to the Air and Space Museum. Got tons of pictures, and as you can tell by some of them, it was packed.

A very detailed model of some U.S.S Enterprise. The guy who made it spent 12 years and over 12,000 hours to make it.

4 Billion years? Really?

Capitol of the Capitol

Dinner at Ruth Chris. Wow. I got a ribeye steak, sizzled with extra butter. I then proceeded to put the rest of the butter that came with the bread on the plate, which comes around 500 degrees to keep your steak warm, so it melted beautifully. Great food + poor service = free desserts. Remember that.

Drooling yet?

A couple of things I learned/observed during the day:
· George Washington had a lot potential to be a big loser. He took a lot of risks regarding war, but fortunately they turned out perfectly
· George Washington would have rolled over in his grave if he saw the huge food court they built at Mt. Vernon
· Every group of teenagers, no matter what they are doing, or where they are, are extremely cool, and you aren’t
· 90% of people waiting in line have absolutely no clue what they are waiting for

Itinerary for tomorrow:
Breakfast @ the Old Ebbit Grill
Lunch @ the Old Post Office Building
Dinner@ Georgia Brown’s

Possible places to go:
Spy Museum
National Archives
Capitol
Surpreme Court
Library of Congress
National Geographic Society

Meet you here tomorrow, same time...

4/05

After a full day of travels, we have arrived in the beautiful, monumental (get it?) city of Washington D.C. After catching the last minutes of the pitiful UCLA game, we went to a fancy seafood restaurant called Sea Catch. The table next to us featured $250 bottles of wine, and $15,000 solid gold watches. I felt sort of underdressed in my jeans….

A couple of things I learned/observed during the day:
· I finally found a use for “airplane mode” on my phone
· Its normal for groups of asian tourists to wear the same thing, and have the exact same suitcase
· It’s funny to watch people spill their drinks during turbulence
· The best toilets are at O'Hare International Airport

Tomorrow morning at 7:30 A.M. EST, we will start a 6 hour tour to Mount Vernon, then perhaps the Air and Space museum and Kennedy Center in the afternoon. To finish the day off, a lovely steak dinner at a little place called Ruth's Chris.

See ya tomorrow night!
